Allan Smith's career personal best
A 2.29m PB places Allan among the all-time top British high jumpers. He competed at the Commonwealth Games, European Athletics Championships, and earned four British Championship titles across his career as a GB and Scotland international. That experience — the technique, the competition preparation, the mental approach — is what he brings to every coaching session at Meadowbank.
Allan Smith spent over a decade competing as one of Britain's top high jumpers — four British titles, GB and Scotland international vests, Commonwealth Games and European Championship finals. After retiring, he brought that world-class technical knowledge into coaching at Meadowbank Sports Centre. When Allan coaches the Fosbury Flop, the curve run, the bar clearance — he's not reciting a textbook. He's coaching from experience of doing it at the highest level for years.
Book with Allan — £80Approach run
Consistent, curved approach with the right speed and foot placement to maximise takeoff power. One of the biggest performance differentiators at every level.
Penultimate step
The final two steps before takeoff determine your projection angle. We coach the specific mechanics that transfer horizontal speed into vertical lift.
Takeoff mechanics
Foot placement, plant angle, drive leg, and arm swing — the milliseconds of contact that set the height of every jump.
Back arch & bar clearance
The Fosbury Flop back arch, hip lift, and leg kick over the bar — coaching the exact technique used by GB internationals.
Run-up consistency
Marking and repeating a precise approach is a skill in itself. We drill until it becomes automatic under competition pressure.
Competition strategy
Bar progression, opening heights, pass strategies, and the mental approach to competition — from club level to national championships.
Complete beginners
Never jumped before? Perfect. Many of our athletes start from zero. We build from the foundations — approach run, takeoff mechanics, and safe bar clearance — in a structured, confidence-first environment.
Club athletes
Already competing at club level and want to improve your PB? We provide the technical detail and competition preparation that most club coaching programmes can't offer — from a coach who's jumped 2.29m.
Competitive & elite
Targeting Scottish Athletics, British Championships, or beyond? Allan's coaching is built for athletes with serious competitive ambitions — technique refinement, competition planning, and the marginal gains that separate good from great.
