After retiring, he brought that world-class technical knowledge into coaching at Meadowbank Sports Centre. When Allan coaches the Fosbury Flop, the curve run, the bar clearance — he's not reciting a textbook. He's coaching from experience of doing it at the highest level for years.

Technical coaching What we work on in every session. High jump is one of the most technical events in athletics. Every element of the approach, takeoff, and clearance is coachable — and each one can add centimetres to your personal best.
🏃

Approach run

Consistent, curved approach with the right speed and foot placement to maximise takeoff power. One of the biggest performance differentiators at every level.

📐

Penultimate step

The final two steps before takeoff determine your projection angle. We coach the specific mechanics that transfer horizontal speed into vertical lift.

⬆️

Takeoff mechanics

Foot placement, plant angle, drive leg, and arm swing — the milliseconds of contact that set the height of every jump.

🔄

Back arch & bar clearance

The Fosbury Flop back arch, hip lift, and leg kick over the bar — coaching the exact technique used by GB internationals.

🎯

Run-up consistency

Marking and repeating a precise approach is a skill in itself. We drill until it becomes automatic under competition pressure.

🏆

Competition strategy

Bar progression, opening heights, pass strategies, and the mental approach to competition — from club level to national championships.

Who we coach Every level. Every goal.
01

Complete beginners

Never jumped before? Perfect. Many of our athletes start from zero. We build from the foundations — approach run, takeoff mechanics, and safe bar clearance — in a structured, confidence-first environment.

02

Club athletes

Already competing at club level and want to improve your PB? We provide the technical detail and competition preparation that most club coaching programmes can't offer — from a coach who's jumped 2.29m.

03

Competitive & elite

Targeting Scottish Athletics, British Championships, or beyond? Allan's coaching is built for athletes with serious competitive ambitions — technique refinement, competition planning, and the marginal gains that separate good from great.

Questions Before you book.
No experience needed. Complete beginners are welcome at both the Friday Night group session and 1:1 private sessions. Allan coaches from the very foundations — if you've never done the Fosbury Flop, he'll teach you properly from scratch. Many of the best technical improvements come from athletes who never had bad habits ingrained in the first place.
Friday Night High Jump is a coached group session — great for consistent weekly training, a competitive group atmosphere, and building technique progressively over time. A private session is 1:1 with Allan — every minute is focused entirely on you, your mechanics, and your goals. Private sessions deliver the fastest technical improvement. Many athletes do both.
Athletics spikes or flat-soled trainers, comfortable sports kit, and a water bottle. If you have your own spikes bring them — if not, trainers are fine. Meadowbank has a fully equipped high jump pit with standards, bar, and matting. You don't need to bring any equipment.
Yes — monthly plans are available for private 1:1 sessions with Allan. Plans start from £72/month and save up to 25% compared to single sessions. Visit the Plans & Pricing page for full details.
Absolutely. Allan coaches young athletes across the full age range. High jump is an excellent event for youth athletes to develop — the approach run mechanics, coordination, and body awareness built through high jump training transfer directly to sprint and field events. Junior athletes are welcome at both the Friday session and private sessions.
Ready to jump higher? Book your first session. Private 1:1 sessions from £80 — or join Friday Night High Jump for £40/month at Meadowbank Sports Centre. Coached by a 4× British Champion and 2.29m GB international.
