Why football players need sprint coaching Speed wins football games. Pace separates good footballers from great ones. But most players never receive dedicated speed coaching — they just train fitness. Here's why that's the difference between plateauing and progressing.

First-step quickness

The first 3–5 metres decides most football duels. Explosive first-step acceleration — not top speed — is what lets you beat a defender, close down a midfielder, or win a loose ball first.

🏃

Technique is everything

Most footballers run with inefficient mechanics — wasted energy, reduced stride efficiency, slower acceleration. Sprint coaching fixes the technical causes of slow running that fitness training can't touch.

📈

Measurable in weeks

Speed improvements in football are measurable within 4–6 weeks of consistent coaching. We time every athlete so you know exactly how much faster you've become — in seconds, not feelings.

What we coach Football-specific speed coaching. Every service is designed around the specific demands of football — not generic athletics training applied to a football player.
01

Acceleration & first-step speed

The most important speed quality in football. We train the first 0–10 metres with specific drills targeting explosive power, body angle, and drive phase mechanics.

  • Standing start acceleration
  • Reactive first-step from game positions
  • Drive phase mechanics and body lean
  • Hip extension and ground contact time
02

Sprint technique development

Correct sprint mechanics — arm drive, foot strike, posture, stride pattern — that make every metre of running more efficient and every sprint faster.

  • Arm mechanics and upper body efficiency
  • Foot strike pattern and ground contact
  • Stride length and frequency optimisation
  • Video feedback every session
03

Change of direction speed

Football speed isn't linear. We train cutting, turning, and reactive directional change to make you quicker to react and faster to accelerate in any direction.

  • Deceleration and re-acceleration mechanics
  • Cutting technique and body angles
  • Reactive agility drills
  • Transition speed from static positions
04

Speed endurance for football

Being fast in the first minute is easy. Being fast in the 85th minute is a skill. We build the specific energy systems that maintain your sprint quality throughout a full 90 minutes.

  • Sprint-based conditioning protocols
  • Alactic and lactic system development
  • In-season speed maintenance
  • Pre-season speed & fitness building
Who we coach Every position. Every level. Speed matters in every position on the pitch. Here's how we apply sprint coaching to the specific demands of each role.

Wingers & forwards

Pure acceleration to beat full-backs, top-end speed in behind, explosive first touch and sprint combinations.

🔄

Full-backs

Repeated sprint capacity, recovery runs, explosive forward drives from deep positions.

🎯

Central midfielders

Short burst acceleration to press, first-step quickness to win second balls, transition speed.

🛡

Centre-backs

Explosive recovery speed, turning and tracking ability, aerial approach speed.

👧

Youth players

Foundational sprint mechanics built at the right age — habits that accelerate development across the whole career.

🏆

All levels

From youth academy players to senior amateurs — every level benefits from dedicated sprint coaching.

Real results from real footballers.

Sprint coaching produces measurable, objective results. We time every athlete from their first session — and track improvement in real numbers. Footballers typically see 0.1–0.3 second improvements in 20m sprint times within 6 weeks of consistent coaching. That's the difference between winning and losing the race to the ball.

Not at all. We coach footballers from youth level through to senior amateurs and semi-professionals. Whether you play in a Sunday league or a regional league, the same mechanics and principles apply — and the same improvements are achievable.
Most footballers notice improvements in their acceleration and first-step quickness within 3–4 sessions. Measurable improvements in timed sprint tests typically show within 4–6 weeks of consistent coaching. The improvements transfer directly to match performance — faster closing speed, winning more first balls, beating more defenders.
Yes — we regularly work with footballers in-season. Sessions are designed to improve speed without compromising your recovery for matches. We adjust the volume and intensity of sessions based on your match schedule. In-season coaching typically focuses on maintaining and sharpening speed rather than maximum volume loading.
Absolutely. Youth footballers aged 8–15 can join Speed School every Monday at The Meadows (£15/session or £40/month). For older youth players (16+) or parents wanting 1:1 development work, individual sessions with any of our coaches are available and highly recommended as a complement to club football.
