Build your day
Choose three events from the menu. Add up to two more if you want a longer session. Every day finishes with results and medals.
Official weights for the throws
Every throw uses the senior competition implement, the same weight used at the British Championships and the Olympics. Your distances are directly comparable with real results.
| Event | Women | Men | Thrown from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shot put | 4kg | 7.26kg | 2.135m circle with stop board |
| Discus | 1kg | 2kg | 2.5m circle inside a safety cage |
| Javelin | 600g | 800g | Runway, behind the throwing arc |
Everyone throws one at a time, inside the marked sector, with a coach clearing the landing area before each throw. Lighter implements are available for warm-up throws. We don't offer the hammer on group days.

Booking and your group
How many people can come?
Groups of 5 to 40. With 8 or more you can race two relay teams head to head; smaller groups race the relay as one team against the clock. For more than 40, message us and we'll bring extra coaches.
How much does it cost?
From £45 per person, with a minimum of 5 people. That covers three events of your choice, coaching, timing, measuring, all equipment, medals and a results sheet. Extra events lengthen the session, and we'll quote for them when you book.
How do I book?
Pick your events and group size in the builder on this page, then tap Book your date. You choose a date and time, and your events and numbers are filled in for you. You pay in full when you book, which secures the date. You can also send your choices on WhatsApp or email info@edinburghsprintcoach.com.
What's your payment and cancellation policy?
You pay the full amount when you book. Cancel 14 days or more before for a full refund, or 7 to 13 days before for a 50% refund. There's no refund with less than 7 days' notice. You can reduce your numbers up to 7 days before and be refunded for each person, or swap people at any time. Full details are in our Group Event Terms.
Which days can we book?
Saturdays and Sundays are most popular, and we also run Friday afternoon and weekday evening sessions. Everything depends on track availability, so book early for summer weekends.
Is it just for stag and hen dos?
No. The day works the same for mixed groups, birthdays, reunions and work socials. Only the name on the medals changes.
Choosing your events
Which events can we choose from?
Sprints: 60m, 100m, 4×100m relay and 400m. Jumps: high jump and long jump. Throws: shot put, discus and javelin, all with official competition weights.
How many events can we pick?
Three events are included in the price. You can add up to two more for a longer session, up to five in total.
Does everyone do the same events?
Yes. The whole group competes in the same events so there's a proper overall champion at the end. Anyone who'd rather sit one out can time, measure or heckle instead.
Which events work best for a mixed-ability group?
The 4×100m relay and the high jump are the great levellers, because technique and teamwork count for more than raw speed. The shot put rewards strength, and the 60m rewards reactions. A sprint, a jump and a throw gives everyone an event they're good at.
Can we change our events on the day?
Swapping one event for another is usually fine if the equipment is out. Adding events on the day depends on track time, so it's better to tell us in advance.
The throws
What weights do you use for the throws?
Official senior competition weights. Shot put is 4kg for women and 7.26kg for men. Discus is 1kg for women and 2kg for men. Javelin is 600g for women and 800g for men.
Why use official weights?
So your distances mean something. You're throwing the same implements as the British Championships and the Olympics, and we can tell you how your best throw compares with club and championship standards.
Are the throws safe for beginners?
Yes, with coaching. Everyone throws one at a time, inside the marked sector, and a coach clears the landing area before each throw. Discus is thrown from a safety cage, and nobody collects a javelin until the coach says so.
Can we use lighter implements?
Lighter implements are available for warm-up throws while you learn the technique. Measured competition throws all use the official weights.
Do you offer the hammer?
No. The hammer needs more coaching time than a group day allows, so we keep it out of the menu.
On the day
Do we need to be fit or sporty?
No. Every event starts with a short coaching session and everyone gets a time, height or distance, whatever their level. The competition is within your group.
How long does it last?
Two hours with three events: a coached warm-up, your events, then results and medals. Each extra event adds about half an hour. The event builder shows the estimated time for your choices.
Where is it?
Meadowbank Sports Centre, 139 London Road, Edinburgh EH7 6AE. We'll send you the meeting point and parking details when you book.
What should we wear?
Trainers and clothes you can move in, plus a warm layer for between events. No spikes needed. Take off rings and watches for the throws. Fancy dress is welcome, but the bride or groom's outfit has to let them run, jump and throw.
What happens if it rains?
It's Edinburgh, so we carry on in the rain. We only reschedule for thunder, lightning or conditions that make the track or throwing areas unsafe, and we'll move you to another date at no cost.
Who runs the day?
UKA qualified coaches from the Edinburgh Sprint Coach team, led by head coach Allan Smith, a 4× British Champion and GB International with a 2.29m high jump personal best.
Are there prizes?
Medals for the winner of each event, and an overall champion across your chosen events. Everyone gets their results in a sheet after the day, and you can see how your sprint times compare using our Sprint Standards calculator.
Can friends come and watch?
Yes, spectators are welcome for free.
Can you film it?
We can capture slow-motion clips of the jumps, throws and relay finishes on request, and send them over with your results. You're welcome to film on your phones too.
Safety
Is it safe for beginners?
Yes. Every event is coached from scratch, with a proper warm-up first. Throws happen one at a time with a coach clearing the landing area, and the high jump uses a full-size landing mat.
Is there a minimum age?
Adults and teenagers are welcome. Under-18s need a parent or guardian present.
Can we drink before or during the session?
No. Anyone who arrives visibly drunk won't be allowed to take part, especially in the throws. Keep the celebrations for afterwards.
How do we get into town afterwards?
Meadowbank is on the main London Road bus routes and a short taxi ride from the city centre, so it's easy to head straight on to the next part of the day.
