What is Speed School? More than a training session. Speed School is a high-energy group programme that teaches kids how to move fast — and love doing it. Every session is structured, coach-led, and built around what actually works for young athletes.

Sessions are led by qualified coaches with professional athletics backgrounds. Kids don't just run around — they learn proper sprint technique, acceleration mechanics, and movement skills that make them faster in every sport.

Group sessions are kept small so every child gets real coaching attention. Coaches can see what each athlete needs and give personalised feedback — not just instructions shouted across a field.

Age-appropriate training

Training is designed specifically for young athletes aged 8–15. Sessions are fun, encouraging, and build confidence alongside athletic ability. No adult-style drills, no pressure — just great coaching at the right level.

Kids train alongside peers of similar ages, building friendships and healthy competition. The group atmosphere keeps motivation high and makes Monday evenings something your child actually looks forward to.

Sessions are structured so younger athletes (8–11) and older athletes (12–15) can train effectively together. Coaches adjust drills and expectations to suit each age group within the session.

What your child will learn Real skills. Measurable progress. Every session builds on the last. Over weeks, your child develops a toolkit of athletic skills that improves their performance in sport and builds genuine confidence.
  • Sprint technique & mechanics

    Correct arm drive, body position, foot strike and stride pattern — the foundations of speed most young athletes never learn.

  • Acceleration from a standing start

    The first 10 metres decides most sporting contests. We train explosive first-step speed specifically.

  • Coordination & movement skills

    Ladder drills, agility patterns, and coordination exercises that make the whole body work together more efficiently.

  • Reaction time & decision speed

    Being fast isn't just about legs — we train kids to read the game and react quicker.

  • Confidence under pressure

    Regular structured training in a positive environment builds the mental side of athletic performance too.

  • Proper warm-up habits

    Young athletes learn how to prepare their bodies before training — skills they'll carry for life.

What to bring

Sports kit and trainers — flat-soled running trainers or studs are both fine. A water bottle is essential. No specialist equipment needed. Arrive 5 minutes early for your first session so the coach can meet you and explain the format.

Absolutely. Speed School is open to all abilities and all sports backgrounds. Many of our athletes come with no athletics experience at all — they just want to be faster for football, rugby, or any other sport. Coaches tailor the session to each child's starting point.
Speed School is designed for young athletes aged 8 to 15. Sessions are structured to cater to both younger and older athletes within that range. If you're unsure whether your child's age or ability is a good fit, just get in touch and we'll advise you.

Most children notice improvements in their movement and confidence within the first few sessions. Measurable speed gains — which we can time — typically show within 4–6 weeks of consistent attendance. The key is regular attendance so each session builds on the last.
You're welcome to watch from the side — many parents do. It's not required, and some kids actually focus better when parents aren't watching. Sessions are an hour long so dropping off and collecting works well too. We'll always have your contact details on file.
Life happens — we understand. If your child needs to miss a session, just let us know in advance. We don't penalise for occasional absences, but regular attendance gives the best results. Booking is managed through our online system so you can always check and manage upcoming sessions.
Speed School sessions at The Meadows are outdoors. Edinburgh weather can be unpredictable — sessions run in light rain as long as conditions are safe. In the case of severe weather or session changes, we'll notify you in advance via your booking contact details. Dress for the weather just in case!
